Raid At Kingdom Hill
Short Story From Field Of Thirteen

4 ThrillsTricksy didn't care much for anything but making money at the racetrack. He did not work that often but he survived because his wife worked at a supermarket. His wife did love him even though she had gone through him being in prison for months for his fake race ticket selling and cheap tricks. She also knew that he would be in there again. Tricksy was sitting on his couch watching some of the horse races at Kingdom Hill. He thought it would be a good idea to play a trick to get more money. So he went down to kingdom hill to watch some races. Meanwhile, the committee for the Kingdom Hill was having a meeting about the security. One said that they needed locks on all booths and doors and more and better guards. One of them disagreed because they did not have the money to be spending on stuff like that when they did not have many problems. One of them disagreed because it would be too hard to get in, take up too much time and would make them have to hire 2 more people which would cost more money that the security all together. Major Kevin Cawdor-Jones disagreed. He did not want to waste money and time. They all argued for a while but did nothing. Tricksy went to the racetrack and bought some tickets from Angelisa. She did not care who she sold the tickets to, all she cared about was paying her bills because she was not used to paying for all the things she was left with when her husband divorced her. Tricksy went to the racetrack with half of his wife vacation money, which he stole from her. Tricksy only went to scout out everything so he could do his little trick right. The next morning he went out to the racetrack dressed in a dark suit, tie and felt fedora, his only problem with his race-going gentleman look was the orange socks he wore. Angelisa went to her booth as usual taking pride in selling so many tickets so fast. Cawdor-Jones was in his office figuring out payments and watching people set up for the big 3 o'clock race when he got a call. He answered and some man with an Irish accent was telling him something in a half whisper. Cawdor-Jones told him to speak up because he couldn't hear him. The man hung up. It took him a few seconds to realize that the man had said that he had planted a bomb in the stadium. Shocked he got on his intercom and told everyone about it. They all ran outside of the stadium frantically. Tricksy was outside. He walked inside the stadium happy with his Irish impersonation and the concept of his plan, which was to get everyone out and rob all the money. He started going around collecting money and putting it in his binocular case. Cawder-Jones sent his guards to search for a bomb while he searched to make sure everyone was out of the stadium. Tricksy ran into police a few times but tricked them into thinking he was just leaving. Cawder-Jones found no one anywhere so he returned to his office. Tricksy ran into another guard who let him by only for a second when he saw his ridiculous orange socks. Tricksy, being not so bright, ran. The guards came back to Cawder-Jones to tell him that there was no bomb. Cawder-Jones got on the speaker and told everyone it was a hoax and it was all right to enter the building. All the people returned but were upset and angry because all the money was gone. Even the booth's money was stolen. A guard came up to Cawder-Jones and told him that they found a man who's binocular case was full with money. Later Tricksy had gotten caught and they were asking Tricksy where the rest of the money was. He wouldn't tell them and he knew that he would spend even more time in prison. Angelisa sat in her house with checks to pay off her bills. She was proud of herself. She had stolen some money from another booth during the bomb scare but she was also glad there was another robber.

Blind Chance
Short Story From Field Of Thirteen

3 ThrillsArnold was very wealthy man. If he would bet when he went to the races he would have more but he himself doesn't bet. He gets his money by using a special system. He does not consider himself a miser but he really doesn't like to spend his earnings. He had many negotiable papers in his suite. It was not that he didn't like banks because he knew that they couldn't take taxes away from money won by betting. It was only to be sure he was safe because his wonderful system was but only a fraud and he could not risk an accident of anyone finding out. Jamie was a 15-year-old boy who was blind. He did not know what a horse was like or how fast it was only what he felt when playing with a horse toy. He had no idea what it was like to see but he sees in his own way. His mother would tell her friends his favorite color was blue and they would wonder how he knew what blue was. It was because he could sense the wavelength of light. He had extra sensory so he could feel what color things were. When Jamie woke up Wednesday morning his first thoughts were that the sun was shining and that they were racing today. A man came to fix the TV that had sound and no picture although Jamie really didn't need a picture he knew his mother needed a picture as much as he needed the sound. The man said he needed to take it into the shop. He lent Jamie a TV while he fixed the other because he had wanted to hear the races that day. Jamie's room was full of radios, one for aircraft, one for police, 3 for ordinary radio stations, and local broadcasts. The TV repairman said he had a lot of radios and now that he heard everything he needed a transmitter. Greg was a 52-year-old man without a job. He thought that with his administrative skill he would find some job but they had all told him no or they needed someone younger. He found an advertisement that said, "Jobs offered to mature respectable persons who must have been unwillingly unemployed for at least twelve months". He thought that it would be a job that was illegal but decided to check it out anyway. He was surprised to see a middle aged man like himself. The man, Arnold, who told Greg his name was Smith asked him a series of questions on whether he gambles or not. Greg was prepared to leave because he thought the man was looking for a gambler but the man said that was good because he didn't want a gambler for the job. Greg asked what the job was and Arnold told him he was to go to the races and be when he said to bet and go to race meetings. He would have to send Arnold a certain amount of money and the rest was his to keep. Greg realized that even is Arnold was a fraud he could not be blamed for it. He decided to accept the job. The race started and Arnold stood in his booth. At the finish line there was needed to be a photo finish. He had a radio under his coat that can only be heard by over going planes that would not take a number to be the winning horse. Arnold had 21 men out betting for him, each with a hearing impaired piece hearing what he said in his radio. A half a mile away Jamie had his radio on listening for something to happen again at the same time his TV was on the races. One day he had left he radio on and heard a number during a photo finish on one of the races and coincidentally it was the winning horse now he had his radio on and his phone near so he could bet money on the number he heard. At the race Greg had to bet on Jetset number eleven because he had heard the number in his earpiece from Arnold. He saw many other men with earpieces running to bet on Jetset so he thought that they might be working for too. Jamie listened and heard a man's voice say number eleven too. He called in and bet all of his money on it. Finally the judge told the winner, number eleven. Billy, a man who had lost quite a bit of money to Jetset had heard someone had called his betting shop and bet on the 2 winning horses but nothing more. The woman at the pub had recognized the name of the boy it was the blind boy who could feel colors. She told them he usually sits in his room with the races on his TV and all of his radios on. Billy had came to the conclusion that he must have heard something through his radio. All through this Arnold had no idea that someone could hear his transmissions. He was the first to know the winning horse because he was one of the photo finishers and all he knew is that his little scheme was going perfectly.

Bright White Star
Short Story From Field Of Thirteen

3 ThrillsA tramp wandered, freezing cold, to his nest inside a roofed building. During the winter season he is happy to be under a roof and in a nice warm place. But he doesn't like when people kick in his nest. The landowner of the place he was staying had said he had been telling the man to get off of his land for a few weeks. He had two people from the council and two other people seeing what was going on. The councilmen started taking apart the tramps home. They did not like the smell or taking it apart but they continued. The tramp walked away slightly offended and started walking searching for a place to stay. He needed food, shelter, a nest and fire. Melbourne Smith was complaining either in person or over the phone to the director of the Jockey Club about the low security they have there. Only a month after the November Yearling sales, had he realized that he did not have his prize colt. He had sent the horses to a trainer to train them for him and when he had gone to check them out a month later he found a changeling in the place of his well-grown aristocratic yearling. The only thing the changeling and his aristocrat had in common was the color, a dark bay and a white star on its forehead. Melbourne Smith had said it must have been a scandal. And being a big customer who had spent much of his money into British bloodstock, the director, who detested Melbourne very much, had to listen to his complaints. The director had to help him because he said if he didn't find his horse, he would spend his money in France the next year. Melbourne knew that the changeling was not his horse because every thoroughbred foal was registered after birth with a certificate telling the percentage and birth date, skin color, markings and where exactly on the body the hairs grew in whorls. The markings and whorls were carefully drawn onto regulation outline pictures of side front and rear views of horses. When the foal was grown up and ready to race, a second chart of the markings and whorls was made. If the foal certificate and the later certificate didn't match then the horse was barred from racing. The changeling bay with a white star Melbourne had did not match his aristocrat at all. The director knew that the security at the gate only checked to see if the auctioneers' had an exit check for each horse, and that each horse bore the same number on its rump that was on the chit. They did not check to see if the person had sneakily changed the number on the horses. A person could put a weak bay with a white star into a stable block and bid a high price on it so no one would bid on it. Then when people were to go home with the horses they would change the number on the changeling with the aristocrat and leave them the changeling. Jim and Vivi read the newspaper that had said that a bay with a white star was missing and stolen. They were happy because they had stolen the horse and had not been caught after two days. When talking about their plans to get make the horse a racer without getting caught; they heard a rumbling of garbage in the back. They went out to find a tramp and they had shoed him away. The landowner took a walk around his land and found the tramp with a horse. He was feeling bad for kicking the tramp out of his home and taking away everything of his so he offered him to stay even thought he knew the tramp was lying when he said he had just found the horse. The tramp decided to head on so he left he horse with the landowner. He went into his office and read the newspaper. He called the number for the missing bay with a white star and told him he found it. The man said that he wasn't the only one because some tramp had set all of Jim's horses free. The landowner told him that he believed that the horse really belonged to some man through the Jockey Club. When he hung up he realized that it was Christmas Eve and the tramp had probably let the horses out because he had lost his home on Christmas Eve too.
